Family hotels in Gran Canaria with a playground

16 family-friendly hotels with playground in Gran Canaria . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Looking for a Gran Canaria hotel where the kids can actually run loose for ten minutes without you policing every step? You want a playground on site. Not a sad swing set behind the laundry block — a real play area where children can climb, dig, and meet other holiday kids while you finish your coffee in peace. Gran Canaria does this well. The big resorts in Maspalomas and Meloneras built proper play zones because the island has been a family destination for decades, and the smaller hotels in Mogán and Salobre often add a play corner because they know who's booking. The five hotels below all have playgrounds families have used and reviewed, plus pools, beach access, and the year-round sunshine that makes Gran Canaria worth the flight.

Gran Canaria has two personalities side by side. The south coast — Maspalomas, Meloneras, Playa del Inglés — is the engineered family-resort belt with wide promenades, dune walks, and big pools. The west, around Mogán and Puerto Rico, is quieter and more dramatic: cliffs, harbour towns, calm coves. The north is volcanic and wild. For playground families the south is usually the right answer because the resorts have the space and the budget to build proper play areas, but Mogán is worth considering if you want fewer crowds.

🏰Why families pick Gran Canaria for a playground-friendly holiday

Year-round warmth is the real reason Gran Canaria works for kids. Even January and February sit around 21 °C, which means the outdoor playground stays usable when most of Europe is closed for the season. You're not gambling on the weather to justify the flight. The south of the island gets very little rain, so a sandpit at the hotel is rarely a muddy pit.

The second reason is volume. Gran Canaria has been doing family tourism since the 1960s, and the resort infrastructure reflects that. Pool zones are big enough that you can find a shaded lounger near the playground. Restaurants have kids' menus that aren't an apology. Most hotels run some kind of mini-disco evening, even the ones not branded 'family resort'. Pediatric clinics exist in every resort town if a small ear infection turns up on day three.

Finally — the flights. From the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands you'll find direct services year-round, often with charter operators that cater specifically to families. Gran Canaria isn't a hidden discovery, and that's the point: the path is well worn, which is why a playground holiday here actually works.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Parent's take

Honest take: Gran Canaria isn't the prettiest island in the Atlantic and the south coast can feel like a concrete strip. But it works. Your three-year-old has a sandbox five steps from the pool. Your six-year-old finds five friends by Tuesday. You get a coffee that's still hot. That's the trade.

Why families love Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity

The full-kitchen Family Suite was a game-changer for our two-week February 2026 stay with twin 5-year-olds. We did pasta supper in the suite three nights a week and saved roughly €200. Salobre is quiet and inland, so kids can run between pools without traffic worry, but you do need a hire car since the beach is a 15-minute drive. The complimentary kids golf programme on Saturdays kept ours happy for hours.

A 5-star mid-century classic 100m from Maspalomas beach, recently refitted but keeping the 1970s retro lines. On-site water park is modest (two slides and a splash zone) but genuinely free and uncrowded, which for families with under-8s beats Aqualand any day. Best kids' buffet we tested on the island.

Why families love Seaside Palm Beach

The lagoon pool is the main selling point: a freeform heated pool with a shallow kids' end that slopes to 1.4m. Kids' club runs 10am-12:30pm and 3pm-5:30pm for 4-12. Dedicated kids' meals area with a proper child-height buffet and a menu board that rotates daily. One note: the hotel is a 7-minute walk to the Maspalomas lighthouse promenade restaurants, so plan dinners carefully — taxis are rare after 10pm and the hotel's own dinner is a bit formal for kids under 5.

Why families love Hotel Riu Palace Meloneras

We booked this twice. Walked to the first tee in eight minutes both times, our 7-year-old learned to swim in the kids' pool while my husband played his round, and we met up at the clubhouse cafe for lunch. Hotel runs an evening kids' show in the lobby five nights a week (in case you wonder why families with under-10s love Riu). The suites are tight for four — book the family suite, not the connecting twin.

This one surprises families who expected a Playa del Inglés party hotel. The play area is modest — a slide, a climber, a sandpit — but the pool zone is generous and the breakfast buffet runs late, which is the holy grail when you have two children sleeping through their alarms. Best for families with kids old enough to navigate the resort independently (7+).

If you want one hotel that does the most things well for mixed-age families, this is it. The playground sits between the kids' pool and the mini-club, so the trajectory of an average morning runs through all three without anyone needing shoes. Parents single out the cliff-top sunsets from the bar terrace as the moment the trip pays off.

Why families love Hotel Riu Palace Oasis

We tested this one in October. The kids' club takes 4-12 year olds from 10am to 5pm with a 90-min siesta break at 1pm; under-4s are welcome but must have a parent. The kids' pool is shallow (30-60cm) and heated to 28 C. Main restaurant does a proper kids' buffet with dinner at 6pm, an hour before adults. Only catch: 5-star Riu rooms were refurbished in 2023 but bathrooms are still on the small side and some balconies overlook the car park — ask for sea view when booking.

Why families love Palm Oasis Maspalomas

We booked a 2-bedroom apartment here and did 9 nights in February. Pools are heated in winter (28 C) and the 3-lane slide runs daily from 11am to 6pm with a lifeguard. No kids' club, but there is an indoor play area, a games room (billiards, table tennis), and a children's playground under the palms. The beach is 1.2 km — too far to walk with toddlers — but there is a local bus every 20 min from outside the hotel. Aqualand is 800 m, a 10-min walk. Downside: no real restaurant, just a snack bar, so you cook or walk to the Meloneras promenade.

Built in low-rise Canarian-village style around tropical gardens, this hotel feels much smaller than its 235 rooms suggest. Why families love Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa

This is the hotel to pick if you want a quieter, more adult setting that still has a real club. The 'Club Dinnel' runs crafts, mini-disco and pool games from 10am. Most kids are 5-9, our 8-year-old found it a touch young but had fun in a French-Spanish-English mix. Rooms are Canarian village-style with wooden shutters — ask for ground floor with garden access if you have a pre-schooler. You're 7 minutes on foot from Puerto de Mogán harbour with its Friday market, fish restaurants and glass-bottom boat to Arguineguín.

The club here is a proper operation with a dedicated monitor team wearing identifiable uniforms and a full weekly programme on a printed sheet. Splash park is the kids' favourite — 4 slides and a bucket dump. Our daughter was in the 4-7 group, kept her happy all week. The resort is spread out (useful: they run a train between the buildings) so plan pool and club location when you book. Food is decent rather than special. Beach access is across the boardwalk, about 4 minutes from the lobby. You'll want a car for the dunes walk at sunset.

This is the golfer's pick. You can literally see the first tee from the room balcony. Kitchenette means you can do breakfast in the apartment, dinner at the seafront a 15-minute walk away. The all-inclusive part takes a real pressure off when one parent is mostly golfing. Buffet runs from 7am so the golfer eats before tee time, and the kids' menu at lunch keeps the 5-year-old fed without a fight. RiuLand kids club is supervised, runs daily, and means the non-golfing parent gets a coffee in the adult pool while the kids do crafts. Why families love H10 Playa Meloneras Horizons Collection

Our 7-year-old did the on-site slides 11 times on the first afternoon. The kids' club is proper — an activity programme printed each week, tennis lessons on Mondays, a treasure hunt on the beach on Thursdays — not a drop-and-go room. Dinner: buffet only in July-August, a la carte in shoulder seasons, and the kids' menu is a printed card at the table with actual choices. Meloneras promenade (restaurants, ice cream) is a 4-minute walk from the side gate. The beach in front is small and calm, good for paddling but not swimming.

We stayed in the Garden Junior Suite with a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old in October 2026. The separate kids alcove had its own pull-out and a partition wall, so we could read on the terrace at 9pm without disturbing them. Pool complex is enormous: four pools, including a shallow heated one for under-fives, plus a small water-park area with two slides. The rooms are basic apartments with a kitchenette, not hotel luxury — think functional, clean, with a balcony and garden view. Our kids (5 and 8) loved the water park and went to the club both mornings without fuss; the staff were patient and the group was small (around 20 kids). Food is half-board buffet, decent but not memorable. You're here for the grounds and the pool, and at this price it's easy to forgive the dated decor. Why families love Bahia Blanca

Puerto Rico is built into a south-facing valley with the harbour at the bottom and resorts climbing the slope. Bahia Blanca sits high enough that the trade winds reach the tennis court and keep it cool through the afternoon. The stair walk down to the beach takes ten minutes; the lifts back up save legs at the end of the day. The harbour at the bottom has the cheapest fish-and-chips on the south coast and a small playground.

💡Tips for booking a Gran Canaria hotel with a playground

  • 1Ask reception which playground is shaded by 3pm. South-coast sun is intense and metal slides get hot. The Cordial Mogán and the Lopesan Baobab have partial shade structures — call ahead if shade matters to you.
  • 2Book a room within sight of the play area if your child is under five. Most of these hotels have multiple play zones; specifying 'pool block, family room near playground' at booking gets you a much shorter walk back for forgotten shoes.
  • 3Travel in shoulder season if you can — late September, early October, late January. The playgrounds are emptier, prices drop 30 to 40 percent, and the weather is still 22 to 25 °C. Half-term weeks are the painful pricing windows.
  • 4Pack water shoes. Several of the resort playgrounds sit next to splash pads or sand zones, and the volcanic pebbles on Gran Canaria beaches are tough on bare feet. Decathlon in Maspalomas stocks them cheap if you forget.
  • 5If you have a baby plus a five-year-old, book the resorts with both a playground AND a baby pool. The Lopesan Baobab and Hotel Cordial Mogán both qualify. Mixed-age siblings is where 'family-friendly' really gets tested.
