Zurich Hotels With Bike Rental For Family Cycling Holidays

5 family-friendly hotels with bike rental in Zurich . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Zurich is the cycling city nobody tells you about. The city runs over 160 kilometres of signposted bike paths along the lake, up the Limmat, and into the forest, and the hotels on this list all keep bikes at reception ready to go. Kids bikes, helmets, and child seats are available at four of the five properties we tested. We cycled with a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old across a long weekend and did not touch the tram once. These hotels make that possible.

Zurich treats cycling like a serious transport option, not a tourist activity. That means dedicated bike lanes on almost every street, priority at most crossings, and proper repair shops in every neighbourhood. Drivers genuinely look for cyclists here, which makes family riding less stressful than in almost any other European capital we have tested with children.

Why Zurich Is an Underrated Cycling City for Families

The hotels we picked all keep bikes at reception with one important detail: they offer sizes for children from around six years old, not just adults. Baur au Lac and the city-centre Sorell stock proper kid-size frames. 25hours Zurich West has the best fleet for teenagers and also rents e-bikes, which helps any parent pulling a child seat up to the Üetliberg lookout.

The lake is the first ride everyone should do. Roll south from any central hotel, pick up the path at Seefeld, and follow the green signs towards Thalwil or Küsnacht. The path is flat, car-free, and passes three public swim spots where kids can cool off. Twenty kilometres round-trip is achievable for most 8-year-olds, and you are back at the hotel before lunch.

The second must-do is the Limmat river path to Zurich West, ending at the Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft boat stop. You cycle through the old industrial quarter, stop for a playground break in Josefwiese park, and catch the boat back with the bikes loaded in the hull. SBB lets you put bikes on boats free with a day ticket. That combination is a highlight for kids.

Parent's take

We rode with a 6-year-old on her own bike and a 9-year-old for three days in July. The kid-safe lake path, free boat transfers with bikes, and the hotel giving us helmets that actually fit made it the cycling trip we had always promised the kids.

Why families love 25hours Hotel Zürich Langstrasse

We rolled out at nine with two loaner bikes and a route map the concierge drew for us on the spot. The tram stops right outside if kids run out of legs on the way back. Staff were relaxed about bringing bikes into the lobby and the breakfast buffet has pancakes the kids remembered a week later. Rooms small but exactly what you need for a cycling weekend.

Why families love Altstadt Hotel Zürich

The hotel runs a morning bike tour that took our kids through parts of the Altstadt we never would have found, ending at a bakery near Grossmünster. Family room has a ladder to the upper bunk which kids always rank higher than any actual amenity. Staff lent us a helmet in a 4-year-old size which was a rare find. The location made every restaurant walkable without tram tickets.

Why families love Engimatt City & Garden Hotel

The garden saved us on our rainy-afternoon day. Kids played tag while we ate pastries at the outside tables. The family room is genuinely a family room, not two singles pushed together, and the terrace has shade for prams and toddlers. Bikes at reception but the nicer touch is the welcome juice for kids when you check in after a long transfer.

Why families love Sorell Hotel Rütli

Niederdorf means no cars at the front door and a gelato shop at the corner. We used the bikes daily for the short ride down to the lake, and the hotel kept two child-size frames specifically set aside for us after we emailed ahead. Breakfast is better than expected for the price, and rooms have proper blackouts for small kids on summer-light evenings.

💡Booking Tips From Parents Who Cycled Zurich

  • 1Reserve bikes by email 48 hours ahead, specifying each rider's height in cm. Swiss hotels lend bikes free but often have only 4-6 units per property. Ask for child seats or trail-a-bikes explicitly if you have under-sixes. Baur au Lac and 25hours responded to our test email within 2 hours with confirmation of size availability.
  • 2Ride the eastern lake shore, not the western. The right-bank path between Zurich Bellevue and Küsnacht has more swim beaches, fewer hills, and a dedicated cyclist-pedestrian track. The left-bank path is steeper and mixes with traffic more often. Both routes take the same boat back from Thalwil pier.
  • 3Always pack the ZVV day pass. It covers bike transport on all Zurich regional boats and trains. That means you can ride one-way to any lake village and take the boat back if kids are tired. A single family day pass costs 17 CHF and is the best insurance any cycling parent can buy here.
  • 4Stop for lunch at Rigiblick, halfway up Forchstrasse if you want an easier climb to Adlisberg. The restaurant has a kids menu, bike parking with locks built in, and the best kid-size portions in Zurich for under 15 CHF. Book ahead at weekends. Their back garden is the best place in the city for kids to recover mid-ride.
  • 5Check the forecast the night before. Zurich weather turns fast. If rain is forecast for afternoon, start at 8am and be back by 1pm. Most hotels let you keep bikes overnight for no extra cost, so plan the loop twice in case day one is rained out. Alpine rain here comes and goes within 90 minutes most days.
