Fuerteventura Hotel Pools: Wind-Sheltered Picks for Families Who Actually Swim

8 family-friendly hotels with swimming pool in Fuerteventura . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Fuerteventura is the windiest of the Canary Islands and that changes how you pick a family hotel here. A pool that looks good in photos becomes unusable if it sits in a wind tunnel. We went through 40 top-rated Fuerteventura hotels and kept the five where pools are actually sheltered, heated in shoulder months, and designed for kids who want to swim every day. Two resorts have heated indoor pools as backup (Sheraton Golf & Spa, Playitas). All five have dedicated kids' splash pools. Two sit in the calmer south (Morro del Jable, Costa Calma), two are up north (Corralejo, El Cotillo), and one is on the east coast at Caleta de Fuste. Pick the hotel by pool setup first, location second.

Fuerteventura is the Canary Island for families who want sun certainty plus space to move. It is flatter and emptier than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, the resorts sit on dunes and lava coastlines rather than cliffs, and the beaches are enormous. The flip side is wind, sparse dining off-resort, and fewer non-beach attractions. This is why on-resort pool quality matters: your kid will swim at the hotel most afternoons rather than going off for excursions. Pick a hotel with a pool setup you can live in all week.

🏊Why Pool Quality Matters More in Fuerteventura Than Anywhere Else

Sheltered pool design is not optional here. Fuerteventura resorts either plan for wind or they don't, and the ones that don't have pools nobody uses in the afternoon. The Sheraton Caleta de Fuste places its main pool behind a U-shaped building that blocks northerly trade winds. Playitas has an amphitheatre-shaped layout around a heated lap pool that sits 2 metres below ground level. Hotel La Colina in Morro del Jable has a rooftop pool with windbreak glass. HD Lobos Natura in Corralejo keeps its kids pool in an interior garden. Coral Cotillo Beach in El Cotillo sits against the cliff line that takes the brunt of the north-west wind.

Heated pools matter from October to April. Fuerteventura's winter air temperature (21-23 degrees) is better than mainland Europe's, which is why so many families go in school holidays. But pools that aren't heated drop to 18-19 degrees in January-February and kids refuse to swim. Playitas heats its pool to 27 degrees year-round. Sheraton heats to 26 degrees from November to March. The other three (La Colina, HD Lobos, Coral Cotillo) are not heated and are best for June-September travel.

Splash pools beat main pools for under-5s. All five hotels have a dedicated splash or kids pool at 30-45 cm depth, separate from the main pool. This matters because Fuerteventura's main pools are real swimming pools (1.4-1.8 m deep), not the 50 cm wading areas you find in Spanish mainland family resorts. The Playitas splash pool has umbrella shade. The Sheraton has a slide pool plus a toddler pool. HD Lobos has a shaded kids lagoon. Your under-5 will spend 90% of their pool time in these.

Parent's take

We went in February with a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old. Sheraton was the only hotel where both kids swam every single afternoon without complaining about cold. The windbreak worked. The heated pool worked. The 4-year-old owned the toddler pool for four hours a day. If you're going October-April, heated pool is not optional. If you're going June-September, the other four are fine.

Why families love Hotel La Colina

La Colina is what you pick when you want a small friendly hotel rather than a 600-room mega resort. The walk from reception to the beach is under two minutes — fewer than the time it takes our 5-year-old to find her swim shoes. The kids pool is small but warm, and the terraced pool layout means shaded loungers even at 3pm. The restaurant keeps the same menu most nights which suited ours; ask for the family room with the kitchenette if you're staying a week.

2#2 Best for Swimming Pool

Self-contained 4-star sports resort on a quiet black-sand bay in south-east Fuerteventura. Five pools, including a 25m training pool and a shaded toddler pool.

Why families love Playitas Hotel - Sports Resort

You come to Playitas if your kids want to move, not laze. Ours did a week of football academy in the morning and kayak class in the afternoon and went home fitter. The black sand beach is not pretty but the bay is wind-protected, which matters on this coast. Rooms are dated, food is generous buffet. Getting here is 50 minutes from the airport on a twisty road — take motion sickness tablets.

Why families love Iberostar Waves Gaviotas Park

The club staff here are the reason you book. Three animators on rotation, all speaking at least three languages, and they genuinely engage instead of just supervising. Our 7 year old asked to stay for the foam party rather than come to dinner. The beach at Jandia is the highlight of the island: 4km of golden sand, calm water, and the resort has its own gated access. Rooms are tired but clean. Aggressive AC, pack a cardigan.

Why families love Iberostar Waves Playa Gaviotas All Inclusive

This is the all-inclusive that feels like half-board at a 5-star. The two included a la carte dinners per stay — Italian one night, Canarian another — break up the buffet monotony that kills AI by day five. Staff remember your kids' names by day two. The catch: 457 EUR per night puts four-star Iberostar close to five-star prices elsewhere. Justified if you want premium AI without the awkwardness of the big mass resorts. Beach access through a dedicated path is a real luxury.

Why families love HD Lobos Natura Fuerteventura

We stayed four nights and our 5 and 8 year olds spent most of the day in the kids pool with the two slides. The kids club runs 10am-5pm with a break for lunch and our older one preferred the playground over the clubhouse. Rooms are motel-style but generously sized with a fridge. The big sell is location: walk to Acua Water Park, walk to Corralejo beach. Food was fine, not memorable, and the evening mini-disco is a hit with under-10s.

Why families love Coral Cotillo Beach

El Cotillo is the Fuerteventura we'd come back for: low-rise, fishing-village feel, lagoons instead of open sea for the little ones. Coral Cotillo Beach is a 10-minute stroll from the harbour restaurants and 5 minutes to the shallow Los Charcos lagoons. Apartments have a full fridge and two-ring hob — enough for breakfast and late snacks. Only one pool, so it gets busy around 11am; head to the lagoon instead and come back at 4pm. No kids club, but the playground is shaded and there's a games corner in reception.

Why families love Sheraton Fuerteventura Golf & Spa Resort

The most family-efficient pick on the island. The transfer from the airport is so short that we checked in at 11am with a toddler who had not slept on the plane. The Sheraton is built around a lagoon-style pool complex with a proper kids section, and the gated resort means you can let 8+ kids roam between the pool, the minigolf and the games room unsupervised. Staff are exceptionally patient with young kids. The beach at Caleta is man-made and calm.

Why families love H10 Tindaya

Costa Calma is where you go when you want quiet beach days rather than town bustle. Tindaya sits right on the main strip, so stepping out in flip-flops onto the 25-km stretch of Sotavento takes 90 seconds. The pool complex is the real draw: three adult pools, a kids pool, and a small water slide zone that our 6-year-old used on repeat. Kids club is dependable rather than flashy. Half-board buffet is what you expect from a big H10 — fine, predictable, and the pasta station saves dinner with picky eaters.

💡Practical Tips for Using Fuerteventura Hotel Pools with Kids

  • 1Check whether the pool is heated and to what temperature. Fuerteventura hotels advertise 'heated pool' loosely; some heat to 22 degrees which feels cold. Playitas and Sheraton publish 26-27 degree targets and deliver. Before booking October-April stays, email the hotel directly to confirm the heating schedule. Many turn heating off early if there's a warm November — your January trip gets an unheated pool.
  • 2Morning pool swims are warmer than afternoon ones. Fuerteventura's wind starts around 11am and peaks at 3-4pm. Unheated pools warm up by 10am (sun exposure) but get cooled by the afternoon wind. If you're not at a heated-pool hotel, do the pool swim at 9-11am and keep the afternoon for indoor activities or beach play.
  • 3Bring rash guards even if you're a 'we don't need them' family. Kids at pool edges get cold fast when wind hits wet skin. Long-sleeve UV tops at 15-25 euros from Decathlon Corralejo make a 40-minute pool swim into a 2-hour pool session. The thermal effect is real; not marketing.
  • 4Verify the pool opens before the hotel's 'pool hours'. Fuerteventura resorts list hours like 10am-6pm but many pools physically open earlier — the chairs are out, the water is clean, the lifeguards aren't officially on duty yet. If your kids wake up at 7, a 7am pool splash is often allowed if you supervise. Ask at check-in.
  • 5If the forecast shows 40+ km/h wind days, pick a hotel with indoor pool backup. Sheraton, Playitas, and HD Lobos all have indoor thermal areas. Hotel La Colina and Coral Cotillo don't. In August a 40 km/h afternoon is common and your outdoor pool becomes unusable until sunset.
