Best Beach Hotels in Porto for Families (2026)

5 family-friendly hotels with beach access in Porto . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Porto's beaches are not where most tourists look. Everyone heads to the Douro riverside, the port wine cellars, the tiled churches. But Matosinhos and Foz do Douro, two neighbourhoods at the western edge of the city, have wide sandy beaches, calm summer water, and a string of family hotels between 118 and 308 EUR/night. We found 5 hotels where the sand is within walking distance, the pools exist for when the Atlantic is too cold (it often is), and the kids' meals are sorted. If you already know Porto's indoor pool hotels and want something closer to the ocean, this is the page. Matosinhos Beach alone stretches for 1.5 km of golden sand with lifeguards from June to September.

Getting around Porto with kids is easier than it looks. The metro Line A runs from the city centre (Trindade) to Matosinhos in 25 minutes, and tickets cost 1.60 EUR with a rechargeable Andante card. From Foz do Douro, the historic tram line 1 follows the Douro to Ribeira, which kids love. Porto's Parque da Cidade is the largest urban park in Portugal, sits between Foz and Matosinhos, and has playgrounds, duck ponds, and flat paths for scooters. For rainy days, the SEA LIFE Porto aquarium is 10 minutes from Matosinhos Beach. The spa hotels in Porto work well as a backup plan when the wind picks up on the coast.

🏖️Why Porto works for a family beach holiday

Porto's Atlantic beaches are different from the Mediterranean. The water is colder, the waves are bigger, and the wind can pick up in the afternoon. But that is actually an advantage for families with young kids. Matosinhos Beach has a gentle slope, which means the shallow water extends far out. Lifeguards patrol from June to mid-September. The beach has proper infrastructure: wooden walkways for strollers, showers, toilets, and a row of restaurants 50 metres from the sand. You will not be roughing it.

Foz do Douro is the other option, and it suits a different kind of family. The beaches here are smaller, framed by rocks, and more sheltered from the wind. Praia dos Ingleses is the most popular, with a tidal pool that acts as a natural paddling area for toddlers. The neighbourhood is upscale, quiet after 9pm, and has gelato shops along Avenida do Brasil. If your kids are under 6, Foz is the better bet. If they are old enough to bodyboard and want space, Matosinhos wins.

One thing that catches parents off guard: the Atlantic fog. June mornings in Porto can be grey until noon, then the sun breaks through and stays until 9pm. Do not book based on a June weather forecast. July and August are reliably sunny with highs around 25 degrees, which is cooler than Lisbon or the Algarve but much more comfortable for sightseeing with kids.

Parent's take

We stayed at the Eurostars Matosinhos for 6 nights last July. The first morning we walked to the beach and the kids looked at the waves and said it was too cold. By day 3 they were in the water for 2 hours straight and we could not get them out. The trick was going after 2pm when the sand and shallow water had warmed up. We ate grilled fish at the restaurants on the beach road every evening, the kids had their usual pasta, and nobody complained. Porto felt like a real city with a beach bolted on, which is exactly what we wanted.

Why families love Four Points by Sheraton Matosinhos

We chose the Four Points because we wanted a reliable chain with proper family facilities near the beach. The kids' buffet at breakfast was great, scrambled eggs and pancakes every morning. The walk to Matosinhos Beach took 5 minutes and we were on the sand before 10am. The room was spacious enough for a family of 4 with an extra bed. Staff were friendly and gave us beach towels without asking.

2#2 Best for Beach Access

9.0

Porto's only **beachfront 5-star**, directly across the road from Molhe Beach. The **heated indoor pool** has floor-to-ceiling glass with ocean views. A Michelin-starred restaurant (adults only after 7pm, but the Flor de Lis restaurant welcomes kids all day). Connecting rooms available for families. Babysitting on request. At **308 EUR/night** this is the splurge option, but the beachfront location and pool quality justify the premium.

Why families love Vila Foz Hotel & Spa

Vila Foz was our anniversary splurge and we brought the kids because the connecting rooms made it work. The indoor pool was stunning, glass walls looking out at the ocean while the kids swam. Molhe Beach was literally across the road, 2 minutes with flip-flops. The Michelin restaurant was adults-only at dinner but the Flor de Lis had excellent kids' portions. Babysitting cost 15 EUR/hour and we used it twice for dinner. The spa was the best I have tried in Portugal but children under 16 cannot use it.

3#3 Best for Beach Access
Eurostars Matosinhos hotel facade near the beach

Excellent

1,980 reviews

8.8

The **Eurostars Matosinhos** is **200 metres from the beach** and has what most Porto beach hotels lack: an **indoor swimming pool**. The spa includes a sauna, steam room, and sensory showers. At **166 EUR/night** it hits the sweet spot between budget and luxury. The hotel sits on the restaurant strip of Rua dos Heróis de França, so grilled sardines and fresh fish are 30 seconds from the door.

Why families love Eurostars Matosinhos

The indoor pool was the reason we booked the Eurostars and it delivered. The kids swam every morning before breakfast, then we walked to the beach after. The water temperature in the pool was perfect. The spa area was adults-only but one parent could use it while the other supervised the kids in the pool. The seafood restaurants on the same street were the highlight though. Our 7-year-old ate her first grilled octopus and asked for more.

4#4 Best for Beach Access
Hotel Boa Vista facade overlooking the Atlantic in Foz do Douro
1/5

Hotel Boa Vista

Foz do Douro

Excellent

3,164 reviews

8.5

A **3-star beachfront** hotel perched above the Douro river mouth where it meets the Atlantic. The **rooftop pool** has panoramic ocean views and is open year-round with a pool cover. **Praia do Ourigo** and **Praia do Carneiro** are both a 3-minute walk downhill. The building is a 19th-century manor with character, though rooms are simpler than the facade suggests. Best pick for Foz do Douro.

Why families love Hotel Boa Vista

The Boa Vista won us over with the location. We stepped out of the hotel and were at Praia do Ourigo in 3 minutes. The rooftop pool had the best views of any hotel pool we have ever used, the kids could see the ships entering the Douro. Rooms were on the small side but clean. The breakfast could be better, but the location and rooftop pool more than made up for it. We walked along the coast to Matosinhos for dinner twice, about 30 minutes, and the sunset was spectacular every time.

5#5 Best for Beach Access
HF Ipanema Park hotel exterior with gardens in Porto

HF Ipanema Park

The best value 5-star in Porto at **118 EUR/night** for a family of 4. Two pools: an **outdoor seasonal pool** surrounded by gardens and a **heated indoor pool** open year-round. The hotel is near Serralves Museum and a **5-minute drive** from Foz do Douro beaches. It is not beachfront, but the bus 203 stops outside and reaches the coast in 10 minutes.

Why families love HF Ipanema Park

We picked the HF Ipanema Park because it was half the price of Vila Foz and had two pools. The outdoor pool was the kids' favourite, they spent every morning there while we read on the loungers. After lunch we took the bus to Foz do Douro beach, 10 minutes, and stayed until sunset. The family room had two separate bedrooms with closing doors, which meant the kids went to sleep at 8 and we stayed up reading. That room layout made the holiday.

💡How to pick a beach hotel in Porto with kids

  • 1Book in Matosinhos if you want the big sandy beach and seafood restaurants within walking distance. Book in Foz do Douro if you prefer smaller sheltered coves, the tidal pool at Praia dos Ingleses, and a quieter neighbourhood. Both areas are connected by bus 500 along the coast.
  • 2The Andante card (metro and bus) costs 0.60 EUR for the card plus 1.60 EUR per zone. Matosinhos is zone 2 from the centre. Buy it at any metro station. Children under 4 ride free. The metro to Matosinhos runs every 8-12 minutes.
  • 3Atlantic water temperature peaks at 19-20°C in August. Most kids adjust after 10 minutes but wetsuits for toddlers are a smart investment. You can rent them at surf schools on Matosinhos Beach for about 10 EUR/day.
  • 4For the best beach day with kids, arrive after 2pm when the morning fog has cleared and the sand is warm. Bring a windbreak for Matosinhos (it gets breezy). Foz do Douro beaches are more sheltered from wind.
  • 5If you want a day trip to warmer water, the beach hotels in Lisbon area (Cascais, Costa da Caparica) are 3 hours south by car or train. But honestly, Porto's beaches in July and August are perfectly fine for family swimming.
