The catch is timing. Caneva and Movieland only open late May to mid-September. If your trip is outside that window, Lake Garda still works — Gardaland stretches its season into early January with a Magic Winter edition — but the water parks are shut. Check the park calendars before you lock in dates. Summer queues at Gardaland are brutal in the afternoon; the hotel shuttle that drops you at opening (9:30am) gains you 2-3 top rides.

Our second day was the Gardaland day. We took the 9:15am hotel shuttle, went straight to Kung Fu Panda Academy, and were back at the hotel pool by 5pm. The five-year-old fell asleep in a lounger with an ice lolly still in her hand. Day three we did Caneva in the morning, lunch at the hotel, siesta, then a slow gelato walk along the Peschiera walls at dusk. Nobody wanted to leave. Day four I tried to squeeze in Sirmione — mistake. Kids had hit their culture limit. We went back to the pool.
