Stayed three nights in February with two kids and the hotel handled it without ceremony. The Great Southern is the railway-era grande dame of Killarney, opened in 1854 right next to the train station and recently restored. The spa is mid-sized but well-equipped, with a saltwater pool, snail shower, herbal sauna and a quiet relaxation room overlooking the gardens. Family rooms are large by Irish standards and the buffet breakfast is the best in town.

Two nights with kids 6 and 9 in October. The location is the strongest argument: walk out the front door and you are in the National Park. The pool was open to families from 8am to 7pm without restriction, which made the rainy afternoon manageable. Three nights in summer with kids 6 and 9. The view at sunrise is genuinely worth a holiday photo. The spa is strict 16+, so we used the hotel's separate kids' pool at the bottom of the building (no view but the kids did not care). The drive into town for dinner gets old by night three — book the in-house restaurant for at least one evening. Walking trails start at the hotel gate.
