Reykjavik Hotels with Games Rooms: Where Kids Survive Rainy Days

5 family-friendly hotels with game room in Reykjavik . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Reykjavik weather changes every twenty minutes. You plan a whale watching trip and wake up to horizontal rain. The kids are awake, restless, and the geothermal pools don't open for two hours. This is when a hotel with a proper games room or even a decent board games shelf saves the entire morning. We checked seven Reykjavik hotels with rated game facilities and picked five that actually work for families with kids aged five to twelve. Two have real billiard or pool tables. Three have curated board game libraries with everything from Catan to local Icelandic games. All five sit in walking distance to the city centre or within easy bus range, so the games room is your backup plan, not your main plan.

Reykjavik feels small and walkable but cold, even in July. The downtown is colourful houses and street art, the harbour smells of fish, and Hallgrimskirkja church looms over everything. Most hotels are clustered between the Old Harbour and Laugardalur, with bus route 14 connecting them. Kids enjoy the harbour seal sculptures, the Whales of Iceland museum and the geothermal Sky Lagoon for older children, but indoor backup is essential most days.

Why a Hotel Games Room Matters in Reykjavik

A games room becomes your weather insurance in Reykjavik. The five hotels here all have something kids can use independently while you finish coffee or check tomorrow's tour booking. The downtown picks (Klettur, Eyja, Kvosin) put you walking distance to playgrounds, harbour and Hlemmur food hall. The slightly out-of-centre options (Muli, Reykjavik Lights) sit on bus route 14 and give you bigger rooms for less money.

Most rooms in Reykjavik are small by family standards, around 22 to 28 square metres for a triple. A games room means kids leave the room voluntarily. Worth checking when you book whether the games are at reception (need to ask) or in a shared lounge (always available). The shared lounge option works much better with younger kids who want to wander.

Parent's take

We tested these on a five-day Reykjavik trip with two kids aged seven and ten in October. Two days were rained out completely. Hotel Eyja's lounge with board games and big windows was the salvation. Hotel Klettur's actual billiard table was a hit with the older one. Bring your own travel-size games as backup, especially Uno or Dobble.

The rooms are the big draw — proper space for a family of four, kitchenette to make breakfast or pasta, and a quiet square outside. The library lounge is small but well-curated with chess, Carcassonne, and a few children's puzzles. Walk to harbour, Hallgrimskirkja and Tjörnin pond is under 10 minutes. Why families love Hotel Eyja Guldsmeden

Lovely lounge for families. Big sofas, board games, and the kids could see the trams and people-watch from the windows. Rooms are stylish but small for a family of four — we needed a larger room. Hlemmur food hall next door has cheaper kid-friendly meals than going to a sit-down restaurant. Slightly pricier than the others but the design quality shows.

Best value for families. Our family room with two single beds and a sofa bed cost less than two adjoining doubles elsewhere. Board games are kept in the lobby cabinet, the staff brought us a couple of options when our 7-year-old asked. Breakfast is included and substantial. The bus stop outside runs every 15 minutes to downtown.

Why families love Hotel Klettur

The billiard table is the standout. Real wood, full size, and free for guests. Our 11-year-old played for two hours one rainy afternoon while we sat in the lounge with coffee. Family rooms are tight at around 26 sqm but well-organised. Breakfast is solid Icelandic spread including skyr, smoked salmon and fresh bread. Quiet street so kids sleep well.

💡Practical Tips for Booking with Kids

  • 1Ask at reception: Many Reykjavik hotels keep board games behind the desk rather than in a public area. Ask on check-in even if the website doesn't mention games. Most have at least Uno, Connect Four and a deck of cards available.
  • 2Book triple rooms early: Family rooms in Reykjavik sell out three months ahead for July and August. Triple rooms are smaller but cheaper than family suites. Black Pearl and Reykjavik Residence offer apartment-style options if you need a kitchen.
  • 3Use bus route 14: Hotels in Laugardalur (Klettur, Muli, Eyja, Reykjavik Lights) sit on bus route 14 to downtown. Buses run every 15 minutes. Kids under 6 free, 6 to 18 pay child fare with the Strætó app.
  • 4Pack indoor clothes: Even in July, you'll want indoor layers. Reykjavik hotel rooms are heated to 22 to 24 degrees but corridors and lounges can be cooler. Pack slippers and a hoodie per child for hanging out in the games room.
  • 5Check the swimming pool nearby: All five hotels are within walking or short bus distance of a public geothermal pool with kids' areas, slides and warm tubs. Sundhöll, Vesturbæjarlaug and Laugardalslaug all charge less than 1500 ISK per child.
