Hotels with Water Park in Hersonissos: 5 Picks That Earn the Hype

5 family-friendly hotels with water park in Hersonissos . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Hersonissos sits on Crete's north coast about 25 minutes east of Heraklion airport, and it has earned its reputation as one of the Mediterranean's best water park destinations. The strip from Anissaras through to Stalida is home to two big external water parks, Star Beach right on the seafront and Aqua Plus a short shuttle away, plus a handful of resorts that have built their own slide complexes onto the property. We worked through 50 Booking.com listings, dropped the adults-only spots and anything where the on-site water area was just a kiddie splash pad, and kept five hotels where the kids will actually spend whole days in the water.

Hersonissos is not subtle and that is the appeal for a family week. The main strip is loud souvlaki places, ice cream shops with 30 flavours, mini golf, go-karts and the inevitable English-style pubs. But step two streets inland to Koutouloufari or up to Anissaras and you get whitewashed villages with shaded tavernas where kids eat early and grandparents stop to talk to your toddler. The water park infrastructure is the headline reason families come, but the wider town has more for kids aged 4-12 than any other strip on Crete.

🎒Why Hersonissos works for water park family holidays

Star Beach Water Park sits beachfront at the eastern end of Hersonissos and entry is free for most days outside July and August. Five large slides, a wave pool and a dedicated under-fives splash area mean families can easily fill 4-5 hours. Lockers cost 5 EUR and the cafe is reasonable for a water park (kids menu around 8 EUR). The trick is to arrive before 11am for shade-side sun loungers.

Aqua Plus Water Park is the bigger of the two area parks, set inland near Anopolis with 20 plus slides, a separate kids' zone with mini slides, a wave pool and a lazy river. Most Hersonissos hotels will run a free shuttle on set days, and entry runs around 28 EUR adult / 18 EUR child if booked direct. Plan a full day; the cafeteria food is so-so so families often take a sandwich.

Some of the hotels we list have their own water complex on the property, which matters most when you have a child under 6 who tires after three hours or a teen who wants the freedom to drift between pool and slide without parental escort. Senseana and Paradise Island Villas both fall in this camp, while the others sit close enough to walk to Star Beach in under 15 minutes.

Parent's take

Our six-year-old has not stopped talking about "the orange slide" since we got home. We did three days of hotel pool and two big water park days, which felt about right - any more and the older kids started getting sunburn fatigue. The shuttle culture in Hersonissos is brilliant, you really do not need a car.

Why families love Paradise Island Villas

Private pool plus access to the shared water park was the right balance with two early risers who wanted slides and a baby who needed quiet pool time. Beach access ramp made the buggy-to-sand transition easy, which is rare in Crete. Villa kitchen big enough for proper cooking. Pricey but justified.

Why families love Bella Vista Hotel by Checkin

Free Aqua Plus shuttle three days a week was the deciding factor for us. Family room slept four easily and the kitchenette meant breakfast pancakes happened without the buffet crowds. Walk into the main strip is downhill 10 minutes, uphill 15 minutes back, manageable with a folded buggy.

Why families love Villa Iokasti

We picked Iokasti because we wanted the village feel rather than the main strip, and it delivered. The Greek family who runs it sat with us at breakfast and told the kids about Crete legends. Five minute walk to taverna street. Shuttle to Star Beach was reliable. Pool is small but quiet which suited our two under-fives.

Why families love SENSEANA Sea Side Resort & Aquadventure

We spent four days here and barely used the beach because the on-site water park kept all three kids busy from breakfast to dinner. The buffet is genuinely good with proper kids' tables, and the animation team runs games until 11pm so you can actually have a glass of wine. Family rooms sleep 2 adults plus 2 children comfortably, though sea views cost extra.

Why families love Sunshine Village Hotel

The pool layout was the deciding factor for us with a six-year-old and a three-year-old who needed different water depths. The toddler splash area is shaded by trellises which mattered in July. Walk to Star Beach is 12 minutes flat. Half board buffet is solid Greek family fare, breakfast pancakes were a hit.

πŸ’‘How to pick the right water park hotel in Hersonissos

  • 1Book hotels with the Star Beach shuttle if you want flexibility. The bus runs every 30 minutes in season and most properties on the strip have a stop within 200 metres, but Anopolis and inland Koutouloufari are too far to walk back in 30-degree heat.
  • 2Get to any water park before 10am in July or August. Sun loungers in shade go first, slide queues are nothing for the first 90 minutes, and you can leave around 2pm before the afternoon meltdown hits the toddlers.
  • 3Bring reef shoes for the on-site water parks. The decking around hotel slide complexes gets hot enough to burn small feet by midday, and Crete pumice tiles are unforgiving on bare soles.
  • 4Pack a microfibre towel per child plus their hotel-issue one. Wet swimsuits and three towels per kid means a lot of laundry, and the strip has plenty of euro-coin washing machines if you book a self-catering unit.
  • 5Skip the dolphinarium signs you will see advertised. Crete has no licensed dolphin facilities and most signage points to outdated information. Stick to Star Beach, Aqua Plus and the Lychnostatis open-air museum for kid-friendly activity beyond the hotel.
