Best Beachfront Hotels in Crete for Families (2026)
5 family-friendly hotels with beach access in Crete . Handpicked for families who want the best.
Crete has over 1,000 km of coastline and some of the cleanest, warmest beaches in the Mediterranean. But not every beachfront hotel actually works for families. Some have rocky shores, others are adults-only, and plenty charge resort fees on top of the room rate. We filtered through Booking.com listings and picked 5 hotels where you can walk from your room to the sand with kids in tow. Prices run from 85 to 322 EUR per night for a family of four in July. All five have direct beach access, family rooms, and the kind of facilities that keep children busy when they get bored of sandcastles. If you also want water parks in Crete or kids clubs, we have guides for those too.
Flying into Heraklion airport puts you 25 minutes from Hersonissos, the main resort strip. Chania airport serves the western end of the island. Renting a car costs 25 to 45 EUR per day and is practically essential if you want to explore beyond your resort area. Greek roads in Crete are generally good but mountain roads to south-coast beaches can be narrow. Supermarkets (Carrefour, Lidl, local shops) are affordable, and eating out in tavernas costs 8 to 15 EUR per adult meal for proper Greek food. Kids eat free or half-price at most family tavernas. Tip: order the house wine by the carafe, it is always cheap and usually good.
🏖️Why Crete is ideal for a family beach holiday
Beachfront in Crete means different things depending on the area. In Hersonissos, you get organized beaches with sun loungers (5 to 8 EUR per pair per day), beach bars, and water sports. The sand is mixed with some pebbles in places. In Stalós near Chania, the beach is wider, sandier, and the sea is shallower, better for small children. Analipsi (east of Hersonissos) is quieter with cleaner water and fewer tourists, but fewer amenities too. The south coast (Plakias, Matala) has the most dramatic scenery but hotels are smaller and more remote.
Most family beachfront hotels in Crete provide free sun loungers and umbrellas for guests, which saves 10 to 16 EUR per day compared to public beach rentals. The sea is calm on the north coast from June to mid-September, with occasional meltemi winds in July and August that can make it choppy for a day or two. If that happens, the hotels with pools give you a backup. The beach-access hotels in Sardinia offer a similar Mediterranean experience if you want to compare options.
The Hersonissos area has the most infrastructure for families: mini-markets, pharmacies, paediatricians, and kid-friendly restaurants are all within walking distance of the main hotels. Chania is more atmospheric and less touristy, but accommodation is pricier and the best beaches require a car. For a first family trip to Crete, Hersonissos or Analipsi gives you the best combination of beach quality, hotel facilities, and convenience.
Parent's take
We spent 10 days at a beachfront hotel in Hersonissos with a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old. The routine was breakfast, beach until noon, back to the pool for the afternoon, then a slow walk to a taverna for dinner. The kids played in the shallows for hours without getting cold. The 7-year-old learned to snorkel on day three and would not stop talking about the fish. By evening they were so tired from the sun and swimming that bedtime was effortless. The tavernas were patient with kids, even when our youngest knocked over a glass of water. Twice.

Renieris Hotel
Stalós, Chania
Wonderful
519 reviews
A family-run 3-star hotel on a hillside in Stalós, overlooking Chania bay. The beach is a 5-minute walk downhill through an olive grove. Outdoor pool with sea views, free parking, and a restaurant serving Cretan home cooking. The owner's family runs the place and it shows in the personal service.

€129/night
Why families love Renieris Hotel
The Renieris family made us feel like guests in their home. Yiannis (the owner) recommended a hidden cove beach 10 minutes walk away that was almost empty. The pool has amazing views of Chania bay and the White Mountains behind. Kids loved the cats that roam the garden. Stalós beach is sandy and shallow, perfect for our 4-year-old. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was honest Cretan food at fair prices. The only downside: the walk back uphill from the beach with tired kids.

Petra Beach Hotel
Hersonissos, North Crete
Wonderful
384 reviews
A 3-star beachfront hotel on the main coastal road of Hersonissos with direct access to a sandy beach. The outdoor pool and sun terrace overlook the sea. Rooms are spacious with kitchenettes, good for families who want to self-cater. The hotel has its own section of organized beach with free loungers for guests.

Why families love Petra Beach Hotel
The best mid-range beachfront option in Hersonissos. Our apartment had a kitchenette so we made breakfast and snacks, saving us a lot. The beach in front has free sun loungers for guests and the water is calm and sandy. The pool is a great bonus for when the kids wanted a change from saltwater. Location is on the main road so you hear some traffic, but the beach side is quiet. Very friendly Greek staff.

Esperides Resort Crete
Koutouloufari, Hersonissos
Wonderful
918 reviews
A 5-star resort in the hillside village of Koutouloufari, 10 minutes walk from the beach. Two restaurants, a kids pool, a main pool with sun terrace, and shuttle to the beach. The style is traditional Cretan with stone walls and bougainvillea, not the typical concrete resort. Babysitting available. Beach access via a path through the village or the hotel shuttle.

€302/night
Why families love Esperides Resort Crete
This is where you go when you want the beach nearby but also want a proper resort experience. The two pools (main + kids) are spotless and the sun terrace has enough loungers that you never fight for space. Koutouloufari village is charming, quiet in the morning, lively at night with family tavernas. The beach shuttle runs every 30 minutes. The kid-friendly buffet had options even our picky eater approved of. Staff remembered our names by day two.

Galazio Beach Resort
Analipsi, Hersonissos
Wonderful
322 reviews
A 4-star beachfront resort in Analipsi, east of Hersonissos, directly on a sandy beach. The property has a restaurant with sea-view terrace, kid-friendly buffet, swimming pool toys, and organized beach with free loungers. Analipsi is quieter than central Hersonissos, with cleaner water and fewer crowds. Family suites available.

Why families love Galazio Beach Resort
Analipsi is the Hersonissos area's best-kept secret. The beach in front of Galazio is wider and cleaner than central Hersonissos, and the water is crystal clear. Our kids spent hours with the pool toys and then switched to sandcastles on the beach. The restaurant's kid menu actually had proper food, not just nuggets. The area is quiet enough that we felt safe letting our 9-year-old walk to the mini-market alone. Highly recommend over the noisier resort strips.

Sea Breeze Hotel
Hersonissos, North Crete
Wonderful
346 reviews
A simple, well-kept 3-star hotel sitting directly on the beach in central Hersonissos. The beachfront garden has tables and chairs shaded by tamarisk trees. Rooms are basic but clean, with balconies facing the sea or the garden. No pool, but you are literally on the sand. Breakfast is served in the garden.
From
€85/night
Why families love Sea Breeze Hotel
This is the no-frills beach option and it delivers exactly what you need. We walked out of our room, crossed the garden, and our feet were in the sand. The kids loved that immediacy. Rooms are small but we barely spent time in them. Breakfast was decent Greek yoghurt, honey, fruit, bread, and eggs. Hersonissos restaurants and shops are all within 5 minutes walking. At 85 EUR per night, nothing comes close for beachfront value.
💡Tips for picking a beachfront hotel in Crete with kids
- 1The Sea Breeze Hotel in Hersonissos is the best budget option at 85 EUR per night. It is directly on the beach, has a garden area for kids, and the rooms are clean and simple. Do not expect luxury, but the location and price are hard to beat.
- 2Book a hotel on the north coast for the calmest sea. The south coast has more dramatic beaches (Elafonissi, Balos) but the waves are stronger and the drive from the airport is 2 to 3 hours. The north coast beaches are calmer and closer to everything.
- 3Bring water shoes for the whole family. Some Crete beaches have small pebbles mixed with sand, and rocky patches near the shore. Water shoes make the walk in and out comfortable. Every mini-market sells them for 5 to 10 EUR.
- 4The meltemi wind can blow from mid-July through August, making the sea rough for a day or two. Hotels with pools (Galazio Beach, Esperides, Petra Beach) give you a backup plan. Check the wind forecast on Windy.com before heading to the beach.
- 5Eat at tavernas away from the beach strip for better food and lower prices. Walk 2 blocks inland from the seafront in Hersonissos and meal prices drop 30 to 40%. The locals eat at the same places, which is always a good sign.
