Lyon Hotels with Bike Rental for Families

5 family-friendly hotels with bike rental in Lyon . Handpicked for families who want the best.

Lyon is one of the easiest French cities to ride with kids. The two big rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, both have wide segregated cycle paths. The city's Vélo'v share scheme is everywhere. And five of the family hotels we stayed in run their own bike rental at reception, which means you can collect bikes after breakfast without taking three Métro stops to find a station. We picked five hotels in central Lyon (5e, 6e and 3e arrondissements) that all do bike rental, all welcome kids in family rooms, and all sit within ten minutes' ride of the riverside paths.

Lyon for families is the gentler France: a foodie city without the snob factor of Paris, two rivers you can swim near in summer, the Parc de la Tête d'Or with its free zoo, and Vieux Lyon's traboules which are basically secret passages a 7-year-old will love. The cycling network is on the level of Strasbourg or Bordeaux. Hilly bits exist (Fourvière, Croix-Rousse) but the river banks are flat for miles.

Why Pick a Hotel with Bike Rental in Lyon

The classic family ride from any of these hotels: pick up bikes, ride down to the Rhône, head north along the Berges du Rhône cycle path to the Parc de la Tête d'Or, lock up at the gates, do the free zoo and the boating lake, ride back the same way. Total round trip: about 8 km flat. Doable with a 5-year-old on their own bike. Toddlers go on a child seat or in a trailer (which most rental shops carry).

If the weather turns, you can do the Saône side instead, which has shorter rides but more cafés. From the 5e arrondissement hotels, ride south along the Saône to Confluence, see the museum, ride back along the Rhône. Slightly hillier near Confluence but kids over 7 manage. The hotels with bike rental will print you a free city cycling map, which is more useful than Google Maps for spotting which bridges are bike-friendly.

Parent's take

Quick honest take. Villa Florentine is the views and the spa for a parents' splurge but the bike route to it is a steep climb so reserve a taxi for the bikes' return. Fourvière Hôtel sits next door and has the same view problem but a tiny pool. The 6e (Roosevelt) and 3e (Mercure, Ibis Styles) hotels are flatter, easier with kids.

Why families love Villa Florentine, A Beauvallon Hotel & Spa

We splurged for two nights with kids of 6 and 9. The view from breakfast is the kind that makes a 9-year-old put the phone down. Family rooms are properly big and quiet. The bike tour the hotel arranges goes down via the funicular (you don't ride up, which is critical) and along the Saône cycle path. Pool is small but heated and our kids basically lived in it.

2#2 Best for Bike Rental

Why families love Fourvière Hôtel

Properly atmospheric: vaulted ceilings, monastic cloister courtyard for breakfast, modern rooms hidden inside. The pool is small and slightly cool but it's outdoor in a sheltered courtyard which is rare in Lyon. Bike rental at reception means you skip the queues. The walk down to Vieux Lyon for dinner is two minutes; coming back is a calf workout but the funicular runs late.

3#3 Best for Bike Rental

Why families love Hôtel Le Roosevelt Lyon

The most family-practical of the four-star options. The 6e is flat, leafy and full of bakeries that won't blink at a buggy. From the hotel door it's a six-minute ride straight to the park's south gate. Family rooms are dual-aspect, so the kids' bunks stay in the dark for naps while the parents' side gets sun. Bike rental is plain and friendly, no app required.

Why families love Ibis Styles Lyon Centre - Gare Part Dieu

Best value pick on this list. Family rooms here genuinely sleep four, with proper bunks not just a sofa-bed. Free hot breakfast is included and is the kind kids actually eat (pancakes, ham, fruit). Bike tours are organised via a partner shop that drops the bikes at the hotel, so you don't waste a morning at a depot. Train arrivals from Paris are super easy.

Why families love Mercure Lyon Centre Saxe Lafayette

Reliable middle-of-the-road pick. The bike rental is hotel-direct, with kids' bikes from age 5 up. Family rooms come with a sofa-bed plus a proper second bed if you book the larger category. Kids' meals at the brasserie below are decent (penne, ham omelette, that sort of thing). The Rhône cycle path entrance is at the end of the block: ride down, turn left, you're at the park.

💡Cycling Tips for Families with Kids in Lyon

  • 1Ask the hotel for a child seat or trailer when you book, not on arrival. Most rental shops have one or two of each but Saturday mornings they go fast. Trailers fit two kids up to age 6, child seats one toddler up to 22 kg.
  • 2Ride the Berges du Rhône, not the Saône, with first-time small cyclists. The Rhône path is wider, fully separated from cars, and has parks every kilometre for a wee stop. The Saône is prettier but narrower in places.
  • 3Skip the bike rental on a Sunday morning if there's a marathon or sporting event. The hotel reception will know. The riverside paths get jammed and crossings are slower than usual.
  • 4Pack a thin waterproof. Lyon can be sunny at 10 am and rain hard at 3 pm in spring and autumn. The bike storage at the hotel means you can pause a ride without losing the bikes for the day.
  • 5Combine cycling with the funicular up to Fourvière. From the 5e hotels (Villa Florentine, Fourvière) you can ride down, then ride along the river, then come back up the funicular with the bikes. Cheaper than e-bikes and easier for kids who don't fancy the climb.
