Bulgarian beach sand is genuine fine sand all along Sunny Beach, not the grit you find at some Mediterranean resorts. The sea shelves very gently from the central strip (safer with under-5s) but drops off a bit more quickly at the north end near Sveti Vlas. All beach zones have lifeguards in July and August from 9h to 18h.

- 1Book the private hotel transfer from Burgas airport (BOJ) rather than a taxi rank: it's 40 km and costs 60 to 70 euros private or 15 euros per person on the hotel shuttle; with 2 kids under 10 the shuttle saves significant money but takes 90 minutes with drop-offs. A private hire for a family of 4 runs 80 euros and takes 45 minutes door to door.
- 2Check which beach zone is reserved for your hotel: in July and August the central sunny-beach public strand gets very full by 10h, so 'hotel beach access' matters. Only Dreams, HVD Club Bor and Laguna Park Sunrise have a genuinely reserved zone with enough loungers for capacity.
