How much does a 4-day family trip to Rome in July cost?
Detailed budget: shoestring, mid-range and comfort
July is Rome's most expensive month, with family hotels running 50-80% higher than March or November. Flights from the UK stay reasonably affordable (Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways from 110 EUR return per person if you book 2-3 months ahead), but the hotels with pools β essential with kids in July β push the total up. The good news: entrance tickets barely cost anything thanks to Italy's free-entry policy for under-18s. Expect just 170 EUR in attraction tickets over four days for a family of four, versus roughly 600 EUR for an equivalent trip in London. Meals in Rome sit squarely in the European average (55-75 EUR for four at a classic trattoria), and public transport is absurdly cheap (1.50 EUR metro ticket, free for under-10s). The real budget trade-off is the hotel: pool or no pool? In July our answer is yes, without hesitation. A 120-150 EUR place with no pool often costs you two unhappy children and an exhausted family. The three tiers below all start from the principle that some form of in-hotel cooling is non-negotiable: strong aircon at minimum, pool ideally. Total budget for a family of four (2 adults + 2 children aged 6 and 10) over 4 nights: from 1 700 EUR (really tight) to 7 000 EUR (properly relaxed). Note: budget figures for UK families leaving from London β add or subtract depending on your home airport.
